Browns is a traditional Devon cider apple producing a sharp, slightly bitter, full-flavoured cider with fruity aromas.

It is valued for its clean, crisp finish and reliable cider quality.

Features

  • Medium-sized fruit with white flesh, often showing a red tinge in well-coloured fruit
  • Produces medium-sharp, aromatic cider with fruity character
  • Some natural astringency contributing to structure in blends
  • High vigour growth habit
  • Suited to traditional cider orchard systems

Origins / Notes

Originated in Devon and discovered by Mr Hill, a cider maker and nurseryman from Staverton near Totnes in the 1920s. It has since remained a recognised West Country cider variety.

Strong resistance to apple scab.

Harvesting Season

Late season, typically autumn depending on local conditions.

Storage 

Poor keeper and should be pressed soon after harvest for best cider quality. Best drinking window comes after fermentation and maturation, where it develops a clean, crisp cider profile.
