Nant Gwrtheryn

Nant Gwrtheryn is a rare Welsh dessert apple rediscovered in the early 2000s in Pen Llyn, North Wales.

It is a distinctive golden russet variety with an unusual fennel-like flavour and strong heritage significance.

Origins / Notes

Discovered in the remains of the quarry master’s garden at an isolated coastal quarry in Pen Llyn, North Wales, accessible only by sea. The original tree, estimated to be over 100 years old, was still producing viable fruit when rediscovered in the early 2000s. The variety is now conserved and grown as part of the Welsh National Botanic Garden collection at Llanarthney, Carmarthenshire.

Mid to late season, typically September to October.

Storage

Stores for up to 3 months.

Best eating window is from autumn into early winter, when the fennel-like aromatic character becomes more balanced and rounded.
